Sheffield Metals Is Transitioning from Vintage® to Moonstone.® Here’s Why
Sheffield Metals is replacing Vintage® with Moonstone® — a textured, low-gloss PVDF finish offering enhanced durability, reduced oil canning visibility, and a stronger 40-year warranty.
If you’ve specified or installed the Vintage® color through Sheffield Metals in the past, there’s an important update:
Sheffield Metals will no longer be offering Vintage as part of its product lineup.
To accommodate design requirements, we are now offering Moonstone:
Moonstone® — a next-generation textured, low-gloss finish designed for improved performance and aesthetics. Moonstone blends an old-world look with versatile modernity, featuring a silvery hue with hints of blues, browns, and grays.
It’s important to note:
- Vintage as a color is not discontinued industry-wide. Visit SteelScape to find other sources of Vintage.
- But Sheffield Metals has made the decision to move away from offering it in favor of a higher-performing and fully warrantable alternative
In this article, we’ll break down:
- Why Sheffield Metals made this change
- What Moonstone offers instead
- How to position this shift to home and building owners
Why Sheffield Metals is Moving Away from Vintage

There’s a few core reasons why Sheffield Metals is transitioning away from Vintage:
- G90 substrates are not warrantable, while our standard AZ50 Galvalume substrate is fully warrantable.
- We have a great partner for Vintage, but it’s become difficult to source with the only producing mills situated on the west coast.
- The 20-year finish warranty for Vintage does not align with our advertised 40-year finish warranty.
- We cannot offer weathertight warranties for Vintage because G90 is a non-warrantable substrate.
Moonstone®: SMI’s Viable Alternative for Vintage
Key Benefits of Moonstone®
1. Enhanced Warranty & Long-Term Performance
Moonstone uses a PVDF paint system, coated on Galvalume® instead of G90 galvanized steel like Vintage. This delivers:
- 40-year transferrable paint warranty protection vs. 20-year finish warranty
- 50-year Galvalume warranty vs. G90 galvanized substrate (unwarrantable)
- 30-year warranty protection for chalking (8 ASTM D4214 rating) and fading (5 Hunter delta-E units) vs. 20-year (8 ASTM D4214 rating)
- Better long-term color retention
- Increased confidence for owners and specifiers
The enhanced durability of Moonstone means fewer callbacks for contractors and longer-lasting curb appeal for customers.
2. Textured, Low-Gloss (TLG) Finish
Unlike traditional smooth finishes, Moonstone features a subtle textured surface that:
- Reduces glare and harsh reflections
- Creates a more premium, matte aesthetic
- Aligns with modern architectural trends
This is especially valuable on high-visibility projects where finish quality matters.
3. Helps Minimize the Appearance of Oil Canning
Oil canning is a core sticking point for customers considering a metal roof. Although it’s not a structural issue, it can still affect the finished appearance and can be hard to explain to customers.
Moonstone’s texture and low-gloss finish helps:
- Diffuse reflected light
- Break up visual flatness
- Make panel irregularities far less noticeable
This helps reduce the worst effects of oil canning and offers a major advantage over smoother finishes like Vintage.
4. Built for Today’s Architectural Demand
Moonstone reflects a broader shift in the industry toward:
- Low-gloss, natural-looking finishes
- Higher-performance coating systems
- Aesthetics + durability combined
