Buying a Metal Roof or Wall

How to Measure Roof Slope from the Attic, Rooftop, and Gable

How do you measure the slope of a roof? Watch today's episode to learn 3 different methods!

Today on The Metal Roofing Channel, Thad explains how to measure roof slope from the attic, rooftop, and gable. He uses the rise over run method to calculate the roof slope based on the geometry of a right triangle. Tools needed include a ladder, level, tape measure, pencil, and something to create a flat surface on the rooftop. At the end of the video, he also demonstrates how to measure slope using a smartphone app.

Remember, always practice safe ladder usage and use the proper fall protection equipment for the job. If you’re not comfortable on a roof or a ladder, use the attic method or a smartphone app that allows you to measure roof slope and roof pitch from the ground.
