What products and services does Sheffield Metals provide, and how can they help you with your next metal roofing project?
Sheffield Metals International (SMI) is a leading provider of metal roofing materials. With various branches spread across the United States, our mission is to help grow the industry by assisting our customers with quality products, services, and content.
In this article, we’ll look at Sheffield’s full line of products and services, including how products like coils and sheets are made and what dimensions Sheffield keeps stocked.
Here is the full overview of the products and services Sheffield Metals offers.
Coils and Sheets
Before any sales happen, Sheffield first purchases steel from a mill. From the mill, it’s sent directly to a paint coating line. After it’s coated, it gets sent to a Sheffield Metals branch for slitting and processing before getting shipped to customers.
Sheffield Metals sells painted and non-painted Galvalume® and aluminum coils and sheets.
Sheffield stocks cold-rolled steel, which is a refined, smooth material that’s used on architectural projects like metal roofs. This is in contrast to hot-rolled steel, which often has a rougher surface with more discrepancies — it’s typically used for applications like decking underneath a roof. Since this part of the building won’t be visible, aesthetics aren’t as important.
How Is Cold-Rolled Steel Made?
Cold-rolled steel can be made from raw materials, scrap metal, or a combination of both. The steel is fired in a furnace, refined, and continuously casted into slabs or billets and hot-rolled into coils, which are then further refined using rollers and cooled.
How Does Steel Become Galvalume?®
The cold-rolled steel is then hot-dipped into a mixture of 55% aluminum, 43.4% zinc, and 1.6% silicon, transforming it into the impressive corrosion-resistant, durable coating known as Galvalume®, one of the most popular and widely-used metal roofing materials in the industry.
Galvalume Plus is acrylic-coated rather than painted. This coating is slightly heavier and offers extra protection during manufacturing, though the acrylic coating will wear off over time. And even though this product is not painted, it still needs to be handled with care to avoid scratching, scuffing, or puncturing the coating.
What Colors Does Sheffield Metals Offer?
Material to be painted will then be run onto a coating line. Here it’s cleaned, pretreated, primed, and painted before being dried in an oven.
Sheffield offers dozens of color choices and uses PVDF as the primary coating system for products. SMP-coated products are also available. You can see the differences between these coatings in our PVDF vs. SMP article.
Color choices will vary by the type of gauge you’re using, too — not all 24-gauge colors will be available for 26-gauge, and vice-versa.
Custom colors are available for request, but keep in mind that these will incur additional fees and likely have lengthier lead times.
What Metal Thicknesses Does Sheffield Metals Offer?
Sheffield offers 26, 24, and 22-gauge steel, with 26-gauge being the thinnest metal and 22-gauge being the thickest — the higher the number, the thinner the metal. 24 gauge is very popular due to the balance it strikes between thickness and workability. Remember that thicker metals will offer premium durability, but they will also be more challenging to manipulate during roofing projects.
What Coil Widths Does Sheffield Metals Offer?
Sheffield Metals stocks master coils in 40” and 48” widths. These master coils are then slit to width based on customer orders. Master coils slit directly in halves or thirds do not have waste material, so Sheffield deals in standard slit coil widths of 20” coils that come from 40” master coils, and 16” and 24” slit coils that come from 48” master coils. 4×10 flat sheets are also available and are cut from 48” master coils.
Customers can order dimensions that don’t align with Sheffield’s standard sizes, but keep in mind that these orders will result in dropcut fees. For example, imagine a customer orders two 22” coils. A 48” master coil would have to be split into two, 22” slit coils, which would result in a 4” dropcut.
Coils are sold in sets because multiple slit coils come from a single master coil. If you needed 1,000 linear feet of 24”-wide coil, a 48” master coil would be slit in half, resulting in two, 24”-wide coils of 500 linear feet each.
