What Are Metal Shingles? Overview, Pros and Cons

Discover what metal shingles are, how they compare to other roofing types, and whether they’re right for your home. Learn about materials, pros and cons, installation, and costs.

What are metal shingles, and are they the right choice for your project?

Metal shingles offer a happy medium between traditional roofing options like asphalt shingles and highly durable, engineered metal roofing systems like standing seam. In this article, we’ll give an overview of metal shingles, including the material options they’re available in and their pros and cons.

By the time you’re done reading, you’ll have a better understanding of metal shingles and what they offer.

What Are Metal Shingles?

Metal shingles, also referred to as modular panels or stamped metal roofing, are small, interlocking roofing panels installed in a staggered pattern across the roof.

The modular panels lock together on all four sides, creating a protective shell across the roof. Like asphalt shingles, metal shingles are installed in rows or “courses” – different from standing seam panels, which run continuously from eave to ridge.

Metal shingles are shipped pre-made from the factory, offering a true “roof in a box” solution for installers.

Metal Shingles Material Options

Metal shingles come in a variety of material choices, including:

  • Steel
  • Aluminum
  • Copper
  • Zinc

Like other metal roofing systems, metal shingles can be paired with a wide range of color options in both SMP and PVDF paint systems. Plus, modern print coat technology can create multi-tone finishes that mimic the look of slate, tile, or wood for a realistic look with the benefits of metal.

Stone-coated metal roofing shingles are also becoming increasingly popular – these are made from a steel base with embedded stone granules in an acrylic resin. This offers a textured, unique look that is also highly durable.

New Call-to-action

Metal Shingles Pros

HOA-Friendly

Historically, most HOAs have denied inclusion of metal roofing systems on their properties. But in recent years, HOAs have been warming up to the idea of metal roofs because of their proven durability, longevity, and sleek, modern aesthetics. Still, in some associations, it can be difficult getting approval for a metal roof because its appearance may be different from the styles of the homes surrounding it. In many HOAs, traditional roofing options like shingles are still the default.

Metal shingles provides a solution. While still mimicking the appearance of traditional shingles, metal shingles give you the added durability of metal. With the variety of coatings on the market, you should be able to find a color that matches the other homes in the HOA. Keep in mind that some HOAs restrict metal roofing entirely, so be sure you check the organization’s guidelines closely before making a final decision.

Durability and Longevity

The hardy material of metal paired with the four-sided interlocking panels creates a kind of armored plating for homes, creating a fully engaged, secure roofing system. The metal will stand up well in both hot and cold climates, and the interlocked design will help resist wind uplifts and blow-offs.

Plus, metal is fire-rated and can provide protection in wildfire-prone areas like California. When finished with PVDF coatings, metal shingles have exceptional color fade resistance and protect aesthetics in the long-term.

Most products are designed with concealed fasteners, providing enhanced weather resistance and a clean, streamlined appearance. Some metal shingle products offer limited lifetime warranties covering manufacturer’s defects and any cracking, peeling, and splitting, plus a 30-year fade and chalk resistance warranty for PVDF coatings.

Simpler Installation

Metal shingles are lightweight and come ready to install in a box shipped straight from the factory. No onsite rollforming is needed. However, metal shingle installation still requires specialization, and you’ll need to find installers that know how to align and interlock stamped panels properly and maneuver challenging flashing zones. Improper installation can lead to performance and aesthetic issues.

Metal Shingles Cons

Cost

Metal shingles can cost 2-3x more than asphalt shingles, but metal will also typically last double or triple the lifespan of an asphalt shingle roof.

It’s a good investment in the long-term durability of your roof, but this may be on the expensive side for those looking for a slight upgrade from traditional asphalt.

Availability and Repairs

As it’s not as widely used as other types of roofing systems, metal shingles can be harder to come by, which can result in longer lead times, fewer local suppliers, and less color or material variety, depending on your region.

Repairs can also prove challenging, as metal shingles interlock on all four sides. Repairs and replacements may require removing adjacent shingles, which can increase labor time and overall costs.

If you do decide to go with metal shingles, make sure you find a reputable supplier. Isaiah Industries, for example, is a trusted name in this space that can provide quality materials.

Limited Engineering & Testing

While metal shingles do offer improved durability over a traditional roofing option like asphalt, they may still be limited when it comes to comprehensive engineering due to the slope of the roof and other factors.

Standing seam roofing systems offer tested, engineered products that ensure roofs can withstand specific regions and climates.
